Formatting and special characters
How formatting survives translation, what the editor toolbar offers, and where to find special characters.
Supported inline formatting, such as bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, colours and highlights, is stored with each imported segment. The editors display these styles and the export uses the saved formatting alongside the original document structure. Review styled phrases and the downloaded file, particularly where translated text expands or changes word order.
The editing toolbar
- Text styles: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, superscript, subscript (Ctrl+B/I/U for the first three).
- Color and highlight: apply or clear text colors and highlight colors.
- Special characters: a picker with the characters translators actually need: non-breaking spaces, dashes, guillemets, quotation marks per language, currency and legal symbols.
- Undo / redo: within the segment you are editing.
Keeping formatting intact
The QA checks flag missing formatting and, where automatic alignment was used, uncertain placement of styled phrases. A formatting review warning means you should compare the emphasis, highlights and layout controls with the source. Accepting a retranslation retains its review result; further edits can require a fresh review. Protected PDF objects remain read-only to preserve their layout.
Why formatting stays with the segment
Bold, italic, highlights and superscript can carry meaning. Keeping formatting with the segment lets you review and correct it before export. QA findings support that review; they do not guarantee that every styled phrase or page break is correct.
